To date, Escalera has built 174 classrooms that have served 26,577 students. The new classrooms that Escalera builds often replace the palm leaf and wooden shacks that were previously used. Studies show that a new, safe, and dignified classroom can provide an average of six additional weeks to a student’s school year because they no longer have to miss school in bad weather and higher teacher absenteeism.
The 33 new classrooms built in 2015 served 938 students and provided an additional 5,628 student weeks of school!
Today, we build schools in locations where commitment from the local community is high and there has been a sharp increase in high school enrollment as a result of Escalera’s REACH program.
We estimate that the Escalera classrooms will serve over 91,473 over their projected lifetime of 15 to 20 years.
